We have heard them all; don't wash clothes on New Year's day or you will wash away a member of your family. Eat a hogs jaw for good luck. If a person consumes sauerkraut they will become wealthy. The list can go on and on. My question to the reader is this; can these be found in the Bible? The answer is no.
When does the Bible say the year begins?
Exo 12:2 "This month shall be for you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year for you.
This chapter explains the Passover for the Israelites in the days of Egypt. The Passover or commonly called the Lord's supper or communion today took place in the spring of the year. This was the first month according to God's word.
Where did January 1st come from? This day was important to the pagan culture of the Roman Empire. I encourage each reader to prove this to themselves. A simple internet search will prove this correct.
Should Christians celebrate the Roman New year and all of its customs?
Deu 12:28 Be careful to obey all these words that I command you, that it may go well with you and with your children after you forever, when you do what is good and right in the sight of the LORD your God.
Deu 12:29 "When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land,
Deu 12:30 take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, 'How did these nations serve their gods?—that I also may do the same.'
Deu 12:31 You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the LORD hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods.
Deu 12:32 "Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it.
According to the Word of God we shouldn't take part in pagan celebrations. This includes Christmas, Easter, Valentines and Halloween. I would encourage everyone to search out the truths of God's word.
